Y’all know how much I admire your character and citizenship and how much I respect Bloomberg. And as someone who has done a great deal of encouraging for Bloomberg and for a “Council of Elders” like this over the years, I have to say that the timing is a little remarkable - perhaps it is serendipitous. We are at the beginning of possibly the greatest political awakening of the post-war period; greater even than Kennedy’s or Reagan’s. It started overnight in Iowa just the other day and will break wide open tomorrow night in New Hampshire. I have been writing about politics for 30 years and have never seen a candidate with greater intuitive intelligence than Barack Obama. He has a double-digit lead in NH. But I will tell you this: in the last year we in the northern NH mountains scorned him as the Oprah candidate, then got to like him when we heard his passionate pleas for habeas corpus and his opposition to nuclear weapons and now that we have heard Michelle as well we are actually getting to LOVE him. He will bring a great change and now I feel it will not be stopped. And his first impression this morning is to call for a “post partisan” approach to government. This phrase and idea has travelled from Mark Warner to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bloomberg and to Unity 08 and to John Lynch of NH. It is the very idea behind the Nunn/Boren conference and Bloomberg. I heard Senator Boren last night on C Span - he seemed well pleased with the results in Iowa. The country is at a major sea change - the turning of the fourth post-war generation which historians Strauss and Howe talk of as the most important moment in any historical cycle is virtually at hand; the new century starts this week. You will be the first to great the new day.

Bernie,
I appreciate Senator Obama’s energy and enthusiasm, but let me ask the following. What specifically has he done to foster bipartisanship during his three years as a junior senator? I’m not talking about campaign rhetoric. I’m not talking stump speeches where you hear the word “change” 867 times. I’m talking concrete measurable results of change and bipartisanship.
Now take a look at Mayor Bloomberg’s record during 6 years as mayor of NYC.
You’ll see there is no comparison. Bloomberg is the candidate of change.
