The Silence is Deafening
It has been nearly three weeks since the Bipartisan Forum released their findings to the
public and issued challenges to the candidates from the two major parties. These challenges are:
“In order to break this partisan impasse, we urge the presidential candidates to provide:
- Clear descriptions of how they would establish a government of national unity;
- Specific strategies for reducing polarization and reaching bipartisan consensus;
- Plans to go beyond tokenism to appoint a truly bipartisan cabinet with critical posts held by the most qualified people regardless of their political affiliation;
- And proposals for bipartisan executive and legislative policy groups in absolutely critical areas such as national security.”
The challenges to the candidates are about their willingness to represent the people instead of their party. We have a crisis of leadership! All the candidates choose to ignore the call to address the core issue of partisanship that afflicts our government with inaction. The candidates have completely ignored this basic request. The Silence is Deafening!
I call upon the participants at the Bipartisan Forum (DR. DAVID ABSHIRE, President, Center for the Study of the Presidency, MR. MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, Mayor of New York City, MR. DAVID BOREN, Former U.S. Senator, MR. BILL BROCK, Former U.S. Senator, MR. BILL COHEN, Former Secretary of Defense and U.S. Senator, MR. JACK DANFORTH, Former U.S. Senator, MS. SUSAN EISENHOWER, President, The Eisenhower Group, MR. BOB GRAHAM, Former U.S. Senator, MR. CHUCK HAGEL, U.S. Senator, MR. GARY HART, Former U.S. Senator, MR. ANGUS KING, Former Maine Governor, MR. JIM LEACH, Former Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, MR. SAM NUNN, Former U.S. Senator, MR. EDWARD PERKINS, Former Ambassador, MR. CHUCK ROBB, Former U.S. Senator, MR. MARK WHITE, Former Texas Governor, MS. CHRISTINE TODD WHITMAN, Former New Jersey Governor) to publicly and privately press the candidates to respond.
I call upon the media to publicize the questions to demand their presence in the national psyche. I urge the media to ask the candidates to respond to these challenges. I urge the media or any organization that sponsors a debate, or invites candidates to speak, to ask the candidates to respond with their plans. I urge all pollsters to include these questions in their polls so voters can learn what their neighbor wants from government.
I call upon my fellow voters to accept the Bipartisan Forum message and take it directly to the candidates. I urge Independents and moderates to ask these questions of the candidates. I urge Democratic and Republican candidate volunteers, staff workers, and those in the town hall meetings, rallies, and events to ask the candidates these questions. I urge all American voters to insist that the candidates show real political courage by responding with a plan to resolve important nation-busting issues that are robbing America of a brighter future. If they do not respond with a plan, ask them to have the courtesy to step aside by withdrawing from the election.
I urge Michael Bloomberg to run for President if candidates do not respond in a meaningful way. Please sign the petition to tell Michael why you want him to run.
